LUBBOCK

Lubbock is located in the northwestern part of the state and has a population of 225,856 people. It is called the Hub City of the South Plains and is the largest cotton growing region in the world. Lubbock celebrated the city’s centennial in 2008. It is the birthplace of the late Buddy Holly. It has the distinction of being considered the second most conservative city in the United States with more than 100,000 people. The city continues to grow, and this has meant an increase in the consequences from drug trafficking into the state.

Texas is a large state and shares its border with Mexico. This fact has made drug trafficking a huge problem for law enforcement and state government. The drug trade is big business in Texas and has been connected to the influx of illegal immigrants coming across the border. The passage of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) more than ten years ago has increased the amount of drug trafficking. Rural and desolate areas in New Mexico and western Texas have long provided a haven for drug smugglers. Large amounts of drugs are seized at the border every day. Drug traffickers often recruit human mules to transport their drug supply. Cocaine is available in large quantities in Texas. Most of the cocaine supply is converted into crack cocaine and then sold for high profit. Heroin trafficking has continued to increase and overdoses are on the rise. Methamphetamine is the most abused drug in Texas and most of the drug supply comes from Mexico. Club drugs are popular with high school and college students. Prescription drug addiction continues to skyrocket, in part because of the severe shortage of physicians in the state. This has meant that physicians from other states are permitted to write prescriptions in Texas which has fueled the problem of “doctor shopping.”
